How To: Organize Your Closet

Your closet is the place where you keep your ultra stylish clothes, your favorite pair of shoes and your designer handbags you splurged on. So why shouldn't your closet look just as great as the clothes in it? Yea, I thought so too. But the way you organize your closet depends on many things, an important factor is the type of closet you have. Do you have a standard closet, or a walk-in or maybe a armoire?

The best closets are clutter free, but maybe you don't want to get rid of all your little knick-knacks and other things that you have no other place to store them but in your closet. No problem! Decorative storage boxes are amazing. Although, they can be expensive, especially for something you are just going to store your stuff in but as always shop sales and look around, stores like Home Goods and Target are great for finding chic things for cheap.

I love these and the fact that its a set with variation in sizes! So beautiful, and will definitely be a 'wow' factor in your closet. Small changes such as this, will make you look more organized and make your closet look more desirable. Can we say, jealous friends?

Every fashionista loves shoes! But sometimes keeping them organized and presentable can be a tricky task. Avoid hanging shoe organizers, especially over the door ones, they look tacky and that's definitely something you don't want in your soon to be glamorous closet. If you are lucky enough to have a walk in closet I love the idea of displaying all your fabulous shoes, it will make your closet appear more luxurious. But keep your shoes in good condition, and no sweaty sneakers allowed on this rack...presentation is key.

This only comes in white but can easily be painted to desired color, but personally I like the white. Keep an open-mind and picture your gorgeous shoes on it, not this array of ugly shoes.

Now, if you don't have a walk in closet you need to re-strategize your storage. Clear plastic shoe boxes can be found at your local dollar store, and work amazingly. You can easily see what shoes are in each container and it looks very neat and organized. The lids come in either white or blue, which can look a bit cheap, but a can of black spray paint will easily make them chic. Another tip? If any of your shoes smell less then great, put some vanilla extract on a cotton ball and place inside box, it will keep your shoes smelling fantastic, and avoid embarrassing "Ew, who took off their shoes?!"

Now we can get to the main part of your closet; the clothes! Some like to organize their wardrobe in categories. Sweaters in one section, the dresses in another...you get the idea. But really it rarely ends up looking presentable. Color is what catches the eye; Organize by color! Plus I guarantee you will find what you are looking for faster, and it will be easier to plan out one of your amazing outfits. Jeans, should always at the very end or the very beginning of the color scheme, and don't worry about putting your blue jeans in with your other blue things, but do put your black corduroys with other black items. Also, in continuing with the idea of color, use hangers of the same color; basic white works great!

Just as important, is what gets hung up and what goes in the dresser. T-shirts should always go in your dresser, there is no need for them to be hung up and all they would do is take up valuable space. Color organize your t-shirts as well, and roll them instead of folding, that way you will be able to see all of them at once instead of having to lift up all your neatly organized shirts that become un-folded as you lift them. Shorts should obviously be kept away in drawers, while most skirts should be hung up. Everything that is of high quality needs to be hung up; sweaters, dresses, tops ect. If you'd like you can display something, do you have a favorite dress that you absolutely love but its not really something you'd wear too often? Display it and adore it! Just make sure the dress doesn't take up too much space [ie. no full length dresses or anything with a lot of volume]

And lastly added decoration and accessories. I love pictures that inspire me and have a few on display in my closet, and you never know what can inspire you. I actually have a post card from Japan framed, its so beautiful. And make sure to frame your pictures it will keep things looking neat and like you know how to decorate! Keep frames simple, as you want the actually picture to be doing the inspiring, plus if the frame is too big or intricate it can begin to look cluttered. Save the decorative frames for decorating your room! And let clothes and fashion be the focal point of your closet; as it should be!
